April 24, 2024

A beautiful sunny day greeted visitors to St. Andrew's for an Earth Day Festival that had something for almost everyone.

There were raptors from Fontenelle Forest, a tree frog, a turtle and a hog-nosed snake from Nebraska Game & Parks and a fascinating talk about how queen bees are made. Plus two crafts stations for kids, Earth Day themed books from Chapters Bookstore, a sumptuous bake sale and a very popular plant sale. Visitors could also shop for beautifully designed aprons and skirts and whatnot, all fashioned from recycled fabrics.

The big draw of the day was the team from the Raptor
Recovery Program at Fontenelle Forest, who gave us a close-up look at a one-winged hawk, a Great Horned Owl and a chirpy little kestrel. Kids in the audience got to show off their knowledge of raptors.

An educator from Nebraska Game & Parks showed us the wonders of reptiles and amphibians. Becky Waldop of Becky's Bees delivered a fine talk about the habits and practices of honey bees and offered some fine honey and other bee products for sale.
